Powerlifting Questionnaire - 7/01/05
1. What is your name, age and profession?
Tim Prince, 30 years old. Detective with the South Jordan Police Department
2. Give us a BRIEF lifting history including your best lifts/total.
I’ve been lifting since I was a teenager, doing mostly bodybuilding type workouts. It was a few years ago Carl Wimmer and I began powerlifting routines. It was shortly after I began competing. My best lifts are 435 bench, and 600 deadlift. I have never competed in a full meet, so I don’t have a best squat, but imagine it’s somewhere around 600.
3. Give us a brief template of your training week.
Westside style; two dynamic workouts, two max effort workouts. I usually throw an extra workout in there, and some general physical preparedness.
4. What kind of workout did you do when you first got into lifting and how old were you?
Began lifting as a teenager, doing bodybuilding routines, and whatever was prescribed by the high school gym teacher.
5. What kind of powerlifting workout did you do when you first started competing?
Westside
6. What kind of powerlifting equipment (bench shirt, squat suit, etc.) do you use?
I used to use Inzers double denim bench shirt. Now I use Titan fury bench shirt, and just a plain old Inzer Z-suit for squats and deadlifts.
7. What powerlifting equipment would you like to try?
Titan Centurion for squats. I’ve tried one on, and didn’t like it for deadlifts (couldn’t get down to the bar), but could see it’s benefits for squatting.
8. What is the best advice anyone has ever given you about lifting?
Real bench pressing techniques that get you the most out of your lift. Work on you triceps.
9. What is the worst advice you’ve ever been given?
Any bench pressing techniques from so called “trainers” who couldn’t bench press their way out of a paper sack. For example, “don’t arch” and, “press the weight back towards your head”. I’ve had arguments with these people, and when it comes down to it the question to be asked is, between the two of us, who has the bigger bench?
10. What is the worst injury you’ve had and what did you do to overcome it?
Until just a couple of months ago, I had a chronic rotator cuff injury. Chiropractic work using ART, some simple cable/ band exercises on the shoulder, and a good bench shirt. Sucking up my pride and lightening the weight, and use perfect form has helped out immensely.
11. What is the worst sticking point (on any on the lifts) that you had to overcome and what did you do to correct it?
My bench for a long time never increased much. It was mostly due to my shoulder injury. Once I got that fixed, it started going up. Consistency and working out smart were the keys.
12. What exercises do you believe have increased your bench, squat and deadlift?
Rack and floor presses (hate them, but gotta do them) for the bench. Reverse-hyper and calf-ham-glute raise for both squat and deadlift. Also, I’ve been working out a lot with a medicine ball for the abs. I believe that it has had a significant positive effect on all my lifts.
13. What does your diet consist of?
See-food. I see it, I eat it. OK, not really to that extreme. I try to focus on high protein foods.
14. What kind of supplements do you use?
Protein and creatine. I usually cycle the creatine, starting out 4-6 weeks from a meet. I usually get the best results that way.
15. Where do you get your training information?
Westside seminar videos, internet, this website, for sure. People that are in powerlifting are the best resource, and we have some brilliant minds here when it comes to powerlifting.
16. What changes would you like to see in powerlifting?
I’d like to see the sports media take a better hold of national and world powerlifting events. I believe there is an audience for it. I know we would watch it, if we weren’t there doing it.
17. If you’ve ever had to cut weight for a powerlifting contest, what did you do?
Diet from several weeks out. Panic weight loss with water drop. If I do have to do the panic weight loss, I make sure I get plenty of fluids after weigh in. If I can, I eat large amounts of watermelon.
18. Is there anyone you would like to thank?
God blesses me every meet. So far I haven’t had a really bad meet and I know he has a lot to do with it. My wife for sure. She puts up with a lot, and has been a huge support for my lifting. My kids are my biggest fans and cheerleaders. The Basement Cellar Dwellers (Carl Wimmer, Mike Blankenship, Roger James, and now Howard Shepperson). They dish out as much crap as I give them, so we’re all good. The Big Belly Barbell Club. Dave and Randy Marchant. Your hearts are much bigger than any of us will ever be.
